“You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:13-16)

As I sought the Lord for a word for 2023, I asked Him, “What is Your message for Your people?” In the last week of December 2022, the Holy Spirit showed me a metaphor of a city on a hill in my dream. Upon awakening, as I recalled the dream, the Scripture Matthew 5:14 came to mind: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (See Matthew 5:13-16).

I recalled reading that ancient cities were frequently positioned on hills, which offered better protection and safety. Far away, people would see the lights leading to these cities and find shelter when fleeing danger.

Symbolically, Jesus portrays the inner character of the children of God with this metaphor: “You are the Light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” We, God’s children, are destined to be a beacon of spiritual Light to a lost and dying generation. How is being a disciple of Christ associated with the comparison of being a city on a hill?

Natural Light provides brightness, making it possible to see. During the night, the Light from an elevated city shines in all directions. It can be seen everywhere, illuminating the way for travelers and showing them where to go. Likewise, spiritual Light illuminates through spiritual darkness. Jesus said to His disciples, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). He further explains, He is the Light that illuminates our lives, and those who put their faith and trust in Him will no longer continue in darkness. (See John 12:46). The apostle Paul echoed, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

Light penetrates and dispels the darkness. It enables us to see or makes vision possible. As seen throughout Genesis chapter one, Light illuminates, exposes, guides, and gives life. Likewise, while living on this earth, we are supposed to benefit those we encounter or live with so that they can see God at work in our lives.

In short, Christ is the Light; therefore, we reflect the Light He offers us to a hurting world. “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”  May we be reminded and never forget that Light must first be imparted to us, or it can never go forth from us. Are you a living light where Christ has placed you? Inquire, therefore, whether you have allowed the flame of His Spirit to be kindled upon you. You are the Light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.- A word for 2023!

May You Have Victory in HIM Today!
An abundance of Blessings,
